Have your say on the future of Swadlincote town centre
By David Baldaro | October 3rd, 2011 | Category: Overseal News | No Comments »Residents, shoppers and businesses are invited to have their say on the future of Swadlincote town centre. South Derbyshire District Council is updating its Vision and Strategy document to continue making the town a better place to live, work and visit. The aim is to set a framework for raising its profile as a hub for retailing, service and leisure as well as guiding future work to enhance its vitality and viability. Surveys will be undertaken on selected market days during October. The consultation kicked off when businesses shared their views at the Swadlincote Chamber of Trade meeting held on Wednesday, September 28 at Green Bank Leisure Centre. Questionnaires can also be found at www.south-derbys.gov.uk (Edit: The questionnaire can be found here)or requested by telephoning 01283 595791. The closing date for comments is October 31. Following the feedback, draft proposals will be drawn up and made available for further consultation later in the year. Cllr Bob Wheeler, the Leader of the District Council, said:
“Swadlincote offers shoppers and visitors a unique, historic experience and we need to capitalise on these benefits and encourage even more investment opportunities. The refreshing of our vision and strategy will help to drive forward the regeneration of the town, bolster the economy, help local businesses to thrive and increase choice for Swadlincote visitors and shoppers. I would encourage as many people as possible to get involved and be a part of this exciting chance to help shape the future of the town centre.”
The original vision document was published in 2001 and substantial progress has been made in realising its aspirations. This has included the extension of Sharpe’s Pottery Museum, the restoration of historic buildings, tree planting and the introduction of CCTV. Phase two of the Swadlincote masterplan also saw £2 million of improvements in West Street, The Delph and Ernest Hall Way, while the new Pipeworks retail and leisure scheme in Coppice Side is now up and running.
