At last nights Parish Council meeting at the Overseal Village hall, Councillor John Grant (South Derbyshire District Council) and Councillor Charles Jones (Derbyshire County Council) made reference to a project to obtain some funding and support to upgrade the Overseal telephone to increase the broadband capability. At the moment local residents of Overseal can achieve download rates of 6MB from their broadband connection, however residents that live further away from the exchange are lucky if they get 0.5MB download speeds.

Significant investment needs to be in place for BT Openreach to upgrade the exchange to handle speeds of 20MB+.

Councillors Grant and Jones asked for any public support to this move to be voiced by local residents. Do you work at home? Do you use a residential broadband connection to operate a business or company? Do you currently struggle with broadband speeds? Are you paying a provider for 6MB download speeds when you are getting 0.5MB? What would fast, reliable broadband access mean to you?

Cold Callers Targeting the Vulnerable

In recent weeks there have been a number of companies using high pressure selling techniques to sell mobility products, such a mobility scooters, to elderly and vulnerable people. These companies have been known to give the impression they are from social or health care agencies and do not properly inform buyers about their consumer rights when purchasing mobility products.

Their sales practices have been, and will continue to be investigated by the Scambuster Trading Standards Teams. Please be reminded that as with all cold callers, use your door chain and check identification and do not buy from doorstep sellers unless you know who you are dealing with and have been advised by social or health services of their visit.

Please advise neighbours and members of the community who do not have access to this information directly.

Scam in South Derbyshire

The Police are asking the public to be aware of a recent “scam” that has been used in the Swadlincote area and in some parts of neighbouring Leicestershire. Males described as eastern European looking have been targeting elderly females coming out of supermarkets with shopping. They have either offered to help with carrying shopping back to the car, or have opened a map and asked for directions. They have then been stealing purses or credit cards while the victim has been distracted with the map or loading items into the car. The Crime Reference number is/39057 & 39873/10.

Please be aware of these incidents, and report anyone acting in a suspicious manner to the police immediately. Also – please advise and look out for elderly and vulnerable members of the community.

Burglary in Overseal.

Between Monday & Tuesday 2 & 3 August a burglary took place on Woodville Road, Overseal. Crime Reference number /41999/10. Offenders damage a rear door and use key that is on the inside. Entry gained and a search made. Car keys located and a Ford Focus number FA07CVM stolen, still outstanding.

Summer Extravaganza

Due to the very successful day we had at Overseal Gala on 10th July with around 2000 people there, we would like to advertise Overseal’s next big event!!!.

St Matthews Church are in need of funds to make ends meet.

They are holding a Summer Extravaganza on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th August at Seale Pastures Farm, Acresford (near Overseal) to raise much needed funds.
The weekend will exist of fun activities as follows

Saturday 7th August, from 2pm Fun for all the family to enjoy There will be a magician, bouncy castle, crafts for kids, as well as a It’s a Knockout competition to0 take part in (no age restriction), also available are walks around the beautiful setting of the farm which runs down to then Hooborough Brook and has lovely woodland walks.

Sunday 8th August from 2pm will be much more of a Celebrration of the Arts with demonstrations of various crafts, an exhibition of live music in the form of OJO, a brass group, and a folk group and again lovely walks around the grounds.

Both days there will be a BBQ food to purchase, strawberries & cream along with the usual tea, coffee and soft drinks. The weekend will draw to a close at 6pm on Sunday with an open air Songs of Praise.

A free Car Park is available – The charge for the £5 PER DAY, for Adults, £2 for 9-16 year olds and under 8′s free. No other costs other than food and drinks., so please come along have fun and enjoy good music, good food in good company in the relaxe4d atmosphere of the lovely surroundings of Seale Pastures Farm on the A444. and help raise much needed funds for our beautiful St Matthews Church in Overseal.

Mobile Phone Reception in Overseal (Updated)

I have lived in the village for a few years now, and I remember joining the fight to get broadband to the village when I moved in. We are relatively lucky in Overseal, compared to some of the surrounding villages as we are able to get relatively fast broadband speeds. However ever since I moved in I do not think that the mobile phone reception has improved at all.

I have always been with O2 as a provider – but never received more than a few ‘bars’ of reception on my phone – which is difficult enough to hold a conversation, let alone to do some of the other things my ‘smartphone’ can do! I have heard others say that Vodafone’s reception is better – but can ANYONE get a good mobile phone reception in the village?

According to http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ there is a 8m masts situated at the Overseal Exchange operated by ’3′, which is emitting a high-powered 3G signal across a wide-area. Is it me or does this seem like an urban myth? I know other that use 3 in the village and they are no better.

So, please let me know by leaving a comment on this post if you are fed-up with the mobile phone reception, or if indeed you actually get a good signal!
(If you do get a good reception then let me know and I will come and sit outside to make my calls!)

Top tips for checking coverage at home:

Check the coverage checkers above to see what quality coverage the networks claim for your home and workplace.
Check with your friends and neighbours to see which mobile network’s give them good coverage in your area.
The ultimate test for your mobile network coverage would be to test a phone in your house. You could hold a mobile network coverage party, inviting one friend per mobile network round for a few drinks and crisps!
Alternatively why not buy PAYG SIMs for your preferred networks and test £5 worth of calls in the locations where you will use your mobile phone the most – home and work (you presumably have a couple of deals in mind!)
Don’t forget that different phones have different strengths of reception so buy online and use the distance selling act to cancel your contract and return your phone within 7 days if the coverage is not good enough.

The expensive option:

It is also possible to buy kits that will actually boost and improve your mobile phone reception for use within the home. You do need some level of signal to start with for these systems to work – but they do seem to work. It’s just that they are not cheap! Aladdin auditions open to all

It’s that time of year again! Oh no it’s not! Oh yes it is!

The Overseal Gala Players are getting themselves into gear again this year for the village pantomime, Aladdin. The Gala Players are to hold auditions at the village hall on Wednesday 22nd September starting at 7pm. Everyone is invited whether your intrested in a part, or would like to take part in some other way.

Rehearsals will start soon after and will carry on until the Pantomime opens on Saturday & Sunday 26th/27th February 2011.

Overseal planters set the scene

Recently Overseal has seen the addition of decorative planters at the entrances to the village. These colourful planters have been provided and are cared for by the Parish Council and make for a very attractive gateway into the village.
